1881-S $1 NGC MS65*PL STAR Monster Toned Morgan - Lightning Bolt
This famous Morgan dollar is wonderfully known as the "Lightning Bolt" for obvious reasons. This is not youre typical toned morgan dollar as it is generally agreed upon by experts that the toning occured as if it were stored amonst and in the same fashion as other proof coins of the period. The toning pattern very closely resembles the toning on, but much nicer than, proof coins stored in tissue and possibly in wooden coin cabinets back when that form of storage was acceptable for numismatic items. Considering the fact that the coin is very prooflike, this explaination is the most plausible. However the case, this is universally considered to be one of the finest toned morgans in existence.
