1807 10c PCGS AU55 Original Draped Bust Dime

Lovely 1807 10c PCGS AU55 Draped Bust Dime is super original. Heraldic Eagle Reverse, only 165k minted. PCGS has graded only 13 examples AU-55. Nice original crusty surfaces. Well struck and very well preserved. Subtle lilac rose tones coat a mostly steel grey base lend to the overall eye appeal. Nice original luster highlights the overall look. A lovely piece indeed!
Unlike many slightly circulated draped bust coins this coin has retained its original skin for well over 200 years. During these 202 years, the coin has acquired a steel gray base color highlighted by subtle lilac highlights.
1807 saw the last and largest mintage of draped bust dimes. A total of 165,000 pieces were minted throughout the year. Of this mintage, the majority went into circulation and stayed there for a longer period of time, acquiring wear and other problems. As a result, the majority of the pieces around these are cleaned, damaged or have other problems. This piece is an exception to the rule, being withdrawn from circulation shortly after being issued with most of the luster remaining.
Only one die pair is known for the 1807 dime, JR-1. The reverse die was also used in earlier years, both for dimes and quarter eagle, which shared the same reverse design. As a result, the die became cracked after the heavy use. On this particular piece, die cracks are seen above the clouds, making it a medium die state.
A common problem encountered with 1807 dimes is a weak strike. This piece is no exception, showing weakness on both the obverse and reverse, the result of the dies being unevenly spaced. The original crusty surfaces make up a lot, and this coin is a great example for the AU type set collector.
