1927-S $20 PCGS Genuine Key Date St. Gaudens Gold

Genuine and bold 1927-S $20 PCGS Key Date St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle!! Graded genuine by PCGS. Coin is authentic and was very lightly cleaned long ago. Beautiful orange peel gold base with sharp motifs and problem free fields. Coin exhibits uncirculated devices. Frosty and well defined carthweel effect. Lustrous! An absolutely gorgeous rarity and incredibly scarce in such a lofty state.

Although not as rare as the Denver minted coin of the same year, the San Francisco double eagles of 1927 still are a true rarity. When looking at the mintage, 3,107,000 pieces struck for circulation, this is not expected. However, the story of this particular coin is one of many late date branch-mint double eagles.

After WW I circulation of larger denomination gold coins was limited. By then, people were getting more confidence in paper currency, which was easier to use in general commerce. As a result, large quantities of freshly minted double eagles remained in storage after they were minted, with only a limited number of them being paid out.

As is known to most people, gold was withdrawn from general circulation in 1933 and the public was ordered to exchange their gold coins for gold currency notes. For several years these were held by the government. In 1937 however, most of the gold in storage was melted. It was in this year, that the true rarity of the 1927-S double eagles was created. It would take a few more decades before collectors realized the true rarity of the late date double eagles.

Approximately 225 1927-S double eagles are known in modern times. Of these, the majority (3 out of 4) are in mint state. The present piece was lightly cleaned a long time ago for unknown reasons, although it has very strong claims to be uncirculated. The strike is somewhat weak in one or two areas; as are many of the known pieces. This is however not taking away the overall charm of this piece.

The cleaning has not taken away the nice cartwheel effect which is seen on the virtually mark-free surfaces. Along with the orange peel gold color this coin is a wonderful example of this very rare date. A perfect coin for the budget-minded collector!
