Magnificient golden-red Lincoln wheat cent. On July 20, 1944, far from the Denver mint, there was a failed attempt to assassinate Hitler. It was called operation Valkyrie and Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg was the person who played the key role in the plot. On July 7, 1944 General Stieff was to kill Hitler, but at the last minute felt unable to kill Hitler. Stauffenberg stepped up to the task. On July 15, there was another try. A bomb was planted in a suitcase and was going to be left in a room where Hitler was having a meeting. The plan was halted when Hitler has to leave the meeting. On July 20, Stauffenberg went to another Hitler military conference, once again with a bomb in his briefcase. He placed his briefcase under the table around which Hitler and more than 20 officers had gathered. After a few minutes, Stauffenberg left the room. About 10 minutes later, the bomb detonated, demolishing the conference room. Hitler survived. His pants were blown off and he suffered only minor injuries. It was discovered later that he was saved because Colonel Heinz Brandt supposedly moved the briefcase to the opposite side of the very thick leg of the heavy oak conference table when it bumped against his foot, deflecting the blast.
On July 21, 1944, Stauffenberg was executed.
