Coppertone Suntan Cream was introduced in 1944 by Miami Beach pharmacy owner Benjamin Green, who has seen tourists rubbing homemade concoctions on their skins to prevent sunburn. Having used his wife''s coffee pot to cook up a batch of cocoa butter, he tried it on his bald head and found that it worked. Sunscreen really established its roots during WWII when it was developed as a sun protective formula for soldiers. It became the very first consumer sunscreen product. http://www.coppertone.ca/sun-care-history.aspx, http://www.answers.com/topic/1944#food_availability
