This is a extremely nice and totally original 1890 $1 Treasury note with the Large Brown Spiked Seal. It is commonly referred to as the Stanton Note. The front features the bust of Edward M Stanton who was the Secretary of State under President Lincoln from 1862 to 1865 and President Andrew Johnson from 1865 to 1868. Treasury notes were issued under the act of July 14, 1890 and were back by silver bullion purchased by the Treasury Dept.

The 1890 series Treasury Notes are especially attractive because of the popular Large Brown Spiked Seal and the intricate designs on the reverse. All of the 1890 series treasury notes are rare, especially in high grade PPQ/EPQ condition. Also all of the 1890 series Treasury Notes features the popular Large Brown Spiked Seal. The more common 1891 series displays the small red scalloped seal.

This Treasury is very famous and I chased it for several years until it became available once again. I really like this one in particular because of the low three digit serial number and the almost dead on GEM centering. This example is one of the nicest 1890 $1 Treasury Notes I have owned. If your in the market for a pedigreed $1 Treasury Note at a great price, consider this one. Check out the large scans. GEM 1890 $1 Treasury notes are going for over $13K.

On January 15th, 2015 at the FUN show in the Heritage Auction in Orlando A Fr-347, lot number 21631 in a PCGS-58PPQ with serial number 121 sold for $7637.50 and it did not have a pedigree.
