Fr.-1180 This is the famous 1905 $20 Gold Certificate commonly referred to as the “Technicolor Note” so called because of its deep vivid yellow gold colors on the front. The Technicolor note is a 1 year issue with two different signature combinations and probably the most famous and desirable of all of the large size gold certificates. The 1905 series was created by the act of July 12th 1882 and the $20 denomination is the only gold certificate that features the 1905 series of gold certificates. The front features the head of George Washington with a small red scalloped seal to the right. The obverse is the same for the series 1905, 1906 and 1922.

Most collectors do not own a Technicolor note because of the prohibitive cost. The 1905 series consist of a good amount of low graded doctored notes from VG to VF and a run of high end GEM notes that sell upwards of $50,000 to over $70,000. There are very few Extra Fine to AU notes with the PPQ/EPQ designation. Most of these Technicolor’s have been cleaned or pressed out over the years and now lack originality. With GEM notes reaching and exceeding $70,000 there is a big demand for mid grade notes that have retained their originality and have never been doctored. This is one of the few I have seen. When I first saw this note, I did a double take and examined it very carefully. Believe it or not it is totally original with embossing and nice paper wave. There are no rips, tears, pinholes, edge nicks, spots or bank stamps. This is one of those notes I had to have if the price was even close to what I needed to pay for it. After a bit of hard negotiating I did acquired it!

Look very carefully on the large scans on the front. You will notice the very distinctive dark yellow and gold hue throughout the front. It even covers the “IN GOLD COIN” wording at the bottom. This is a perfect example of what a good Technicolor note should look like! This note was obviously folded and put away many years ago with very little if any circulation. You can tell because there is no soil in the folds and the corners have no folds such as what you would expect if it went into circulation. This is a rare grade for that collector that has been waiting for a great example to appear that won’t break his bankroll. The serial number is A2865580 and it is in a PCGS-45PPQ holder. I also once owned the note before this one serial #A2865579 which was in a PCGS-40EPQ holder.
