POP2/1 finer by PMG and PCGS. This is one of those notes that you never see or hear about. These rare types of notes rarely make it to any major auction house or eBay because they generally are sold in private treaty sales. This is a Fr.-2404* or a 1928 $50 Gold Certificate star. From both the PMG and PCGS population Census, there is only one finer and it is a PMG-58. No one knows where it is or what it sold for. This gold certificate star came out of nowhere and was put away in a very old collection since early 1980.

Earlier this year a 1928 $50 Gold Star sold in auction for almost $13,000. That makes this one a real steal for the collector that wants only the finest available.

Here is the breakdown on the PMG census: 5 in Fine, 8 in VF and one in a PMG-58 holder.

Here is the PCGS census: 1 in V.G., 1 in Fine, 4 in VF, 1 in EF-40 (this is my other $50 GC star) and 1 AU-50 and 1 AU-53, which is this note.

In essence the $50 Gold Certificate note you are viewing is the second finest 1928 $50 gold certificate star known to date. Keep in mind that some of these notes in both PMG and PCGS are crossovers. That means that of the 11 PCGS and 14 PMG notes that they have graded, most have been to both services for grading. I do not believe that there are more that 25 total know in any grade! I can guarantee that there are very few EF and AU 1928 $50 Gold certificate star notes available for sale. Most of the higher grades are locked up in long term collections which is where this one is headed once word get out that it is available. Both of the $50 Gold certificate stars that I have on my website have only been to PCGS. I also have the very rare 1928 $100 Gold Certificate star that I will be putting up later.
