This is the famous 1886 $20 Silver certifiate commonly refered to as the Manning Note or the Diamond Back note because of the back design is in a diamond shape. The serial number is B1308310. Precise detail in the ornate face design is found throught with large portrait vignette of Daniel Manning at center and allegorical figures representing Agriculture and Industry at left and right respectivley. Viewing the verso is of particuliar enjoyment as the back on this twenty is one of the most busy designs seen on a United States federally issued bank note. The popular diamond shaped pattern at center gives rise to the bank notes nickname, and highly intricate geometric lathe work at the borders adds to the complexity. The Fr.-314 and Fr.-315 are the only ones with the popular Large Brown spiked seals. The Fr-315 is by far the rarest of the two. It is the key to the series. PMG has only graded 8 Fr-315 and 22 Fr.-314 1886 20 Silver certificates. They are as follows for the Fr.-315's: Two PMG-55 (Jackson Collection) One PMG-45 One PMG-30 (This One) One PMG-20 One PMG-15 The last known auction of a Fr-315 was in October of 2005, a Rickey Collection note graded as a PMG-45 sold for $57,500. I bought the PMG-55 in 2004 as a part of the famous Jackson Collection and sold it for $48,000 a few months later to a long time collector on the west coast. This is the fourth finest known. There are no rips tears or pinholes. I have not seen a decent problem free Fr.-315 in any auction for many, many years.
