This 1862 $5 Legal Tender is tied for the Finest Known by PMG and PCGS. The serial number is 43715 and it is in a PCGS-66PPQ holder.

I have owned quite a few of these notes Fr.-p61a notes and I find most of them are in the XF to AU grades because of the paper quality. And most of them have virtually no top or bottom margins as they were hand cut. These early notes were printed during the Civil War and were cut by hand. It is very rare to find one with even decent margins on all four sides. Most of the top or bottom margins are slanted and uneven left to right.

The dark green ink colors are as vivid as the day it was printed and the small red seal and single serial number is just as bright and vibrant. The real key to these notes is the perfect margins. This is one special note for the high end collector. This beauty will end up in a collection looking to finish their registery set.

The last Fr.-61a that was in a PCGS-66PPQ holder had serial number 43891 and sold in a Lyn Knight Auction lot # 1783 on 11/10/12 for $10,925. Look it up! These notes in this grade only come out so often, and now you have the chance to own one.

Even if this note is not for you, it is stunning to view.
