Dallas, TX--As most of you know I had a major spine/back operation last December 12th, 2010. I am pleased to say that so far it has been a total success. I just recently finished therapy and got doctors permission to fly. I would like to thank all of you who sent many encouraging letters and emails. I can now walk pain free for the first time in almost 4 years. I am now back into the business on a full time basis for the first time in a long time. We’ll be talking soon.
On a brighter side, I will be attending the Chicago Paper Money Expo (CPMX) in Rosemont Illinois from March 10th to March 13th. If you have any currency want list you want me to search for you please email me at jhon@jhonecash.com or call me at 214-769-9936. You can also check the “Currency want list” on our website.
I also just added over 22 new serial numbers to the 1929 FRBN Star Census. If you have been following the currency market for the last several months you have noticed that the market is on the rebound. Prices of good and rarer material are going up very fast. It is still not to the levels of 2008 but it is indeed on the uptick. If you have been waiting for that right time to buy that special note…do it now. In several months you will be looking back saying that you missed out. It always happens on an up swinging market.
We also added a few new things to our website. Brandon has added a new well written section with many photos on ‘Monster Toned Morgan’s” and also we have added a twitter account so you can follow Brandon and I around the shows. I will try to keep it updated as I travel.

Toned MorgansI have just completed the first phase of my Toned Morgan Dollar Article and Gallery. I have displayed a gallery of some of the most beautiful Toned Morgan dollars and will continue to add to the gallery as I aquire new examples. I examine the history, the estimate number of examples, price ranges for toned Morgans exhibiting certain amounts of eye appeal, auction results from Heritage of Monster toned Morgans, Characteristics to look for in Rainbow Toned Morgans, and much, much more. I have also incorporated information from Doug Kurzs research on Toning and the Thin-film interference phenomenon which is responsible for the rainbow colors we see on Toned Morgans. I am now compiling images of Artificially Toned (AT) examples that I will be adding to the article including more than an uncomfortable amount in TPG (Third Party Grading) holders.

February Long Beach ShowThis was the first Long Beach show I attended in over 2 years. I had heard rumors of the show beginning to decline since the numis-recession occurred in 2008 but this was my first chance to see for myself. Hopes of having a good show danced through my head but the past reports abridged my enthusiasm to make room for cautious optimism. My trip began by waking up at 4:30AM on Wednesday. I was awaken that morning by a hail of sleet pellets creating a white-noise type percussion on my bedroom window. I proceeded to splash some water on my face, put on a pot of coffee and double check everything I was bringing to the show while quietly tip-toing around the house before the kids and wife woke-up for school. I checked the weather and news to see how the recent ice storm had affected the roadways. As I expected, the roads were glazed with a thick layer of ice. Then, after seeing numerous reports of school closings, I woke the kids up with the best news they have heard in quite some time: NO SCHOOL! My wife, who teaches English in nearby Garland, was equally excited. As it turns out, they did not have school for the entire week.
I carefully loaded my luggage into the car, kissed the wife and kids, and slowly headed to the airport over 50 miles away. It took me 2 hours with an average speed of 30mph but I made it on time and safely to the airport where my flight left on-time and got me to Long Beach around 1:30PM. I managed to do a little business before getting to the show for set-up which was nice but also did not leave me much time to catch my breath. Set-up on Wednesday was quite unmemorable but it was nice to see some West Coast faces again. My initial impression was that the show was just as I remembered. Many of the dealers had not arrived yet due to inclement weather throughout the US so my initial walk of the floor was quite bleak. So, I proceeded to set-up our table like usual and did a little business while perfecting my display.
Thursday was hopping with hungry dealers and collectors and the opportunity to say hi to all of my friends that thought I had been in a cave for the past 2 years. Reconnections were made and business came in flurries as folks shuffled past the tables. This was as busy as the show would be during the entire trip.
Friday was pretty slow but Jhon and his brother Bob kept me company on the laptop with the ultra-neat ooVoo program that allows me to see and hear them and they, me. It also allowed Jhon to chat with some of his clients at the show and make a couple of deals while he was sitting in his office in Dallas. The future of coin shows? Maybe. Probably not though. It also allowed me to have an eye watching my table when I needed to pick up coins and drop off checks which gave me peace of mind when not behind the table. The security at the show was pretty impressed with the set-up and they all came around to see how it worked. I felt pretty good about setting it up.
Saturday was DEAD but I managed to still do some good business. I found some coins for clients that were more than happy to hear about since there was not much in the auction that enticed them. I made a few more sales and around 3PM the vast majority of tables were empty. However, the budget section was rocking. Those who wandered over and found me were granted an oasis of sweet coins amidst the orchard of empty booths surrounding me. It was a fun, down-beat day with alot of families discovering the show for the first time. I enjoyed their enthusiasm and encouraged them to pull out any of the coins in my cases they wanted to get a closer look at and ask me any question that popped into their heads. You could really see the essence of numismatic in these encounters sharply contrasting the cold profit based deals done on the wholesale level. I enjoyed this day very much even though the energy was waining into the twilight of this years show.
Sunday I made my way back to Dallas where Jhon and I handled a a few more deals and got coins I bought for clients quickly into their eager hands. I cannot wait for the next show. I will be getting the coins I bought at this show up and listed by tomorrow. Enjoy!
